With Barangay Ginebra leading the series at 2-0, Smart Gilas had answered the call of their coach Rajko Toroman and stopped the momentum of Gin Kings, breaking the plan of sweeping them in 100-88 victory on Wednesday (2-1). The Nationals forced a rubber match as they meet today, Easter Sunday match at 6 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Our guys showed that they’re competitive; that they know how to play basketball. What makes me proud is the sportsmanship and fair play we bring in the game. No one can say we play dirty. We only play with our skills,” said Toroman.
Whatever Toroman was trying to imply, Ginebra Coach Jong Uichico refused to react.
“I respect Toroman and I want to avoid getting into a word war with him,” said Uichico.
Uichico said the bottom line is that they need to apply some physicality in their game “because that’s what Smart Gilas brings in the game.”
“The PBA teams don’t play like that. Of course, they’re (Smart Gilas) used to it because that’s the way it is in international basketball,” said Uichico.
The Ginebra mentor also said they must find a way again to neutralize Marcus Douthit if they’re to bounce back from their Game Three loss. The kings hope to get back on track and try to nail the win against the Gilas and get into the finals against the last conference champs, Talk n Text Tropang Texters, who secured the first slot in the best-of-seven finals as it clobbered Air21 Express, 118-104, Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep of their semis duel.
With the two-day rest, the Kings and the Nationals are expected to come back to hard court battle with tough legs. The Kings are hoping to finish off the Gilas, wary of playing them in a deciding Game Five.
“Game Four is a must-win game for us,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.
The key, according to the amiable Ginebra mentor, is for them to do their best to neutralize Marcus Douthit and hold shooters Jayvee Casio and Chris Tiu
Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, meanwhile, said he’ll be proud of his team whatever happens in their PBA guess stint.
